Hot Yoga!

DSCN2605 “Our bodies crave motion,” said Adrianne, our yoga master at Hot Yoga in Sedona, Arizona. “Be here now. Not in the past, not in the future.”

Good advice. He who does not heed, will slip in his sweat, and crumple into a puddle during down-dog.

This was my first “hot” yoga class, though I’ve been doing yoga for the past 42 years. I actually started with “Lillias, Yoga and You” when I was six. Anybody out there remember Lillias and her braids?

Hot yoga takes Lillias to a whole new level. As you may expect, it’s hot. The closer you are to floor, the cooler it is. As it turns out, though, not much takes place on the floor. You’ve been warned.

My son and I hit up this studio while on vacation so were total newbies to the class. We weren’t sure what to expect so we arrived early. After setting up, and stretching, I thought, “No sweat. We got this. It’s not that hot.”

The next person that came in laid out her mat and sprayed it with water. Weird. We decided to ask.

“Well, see, if you spray it then the towel sticks so when you soak your towel it doesn’t move around…”

What did she say?

We tried someone else. “You probably don’t need to worry about it.”

Hmmmm.

We started out with the “be here now” speech and got going. About ten minutes in I was dry as the desert in June, and then BAM–it’s like a faucet went off. Sweat started pouring, and my eyes were filling up with sweat drops during my down-dog as they rolled from my belly button past my neck and right on up.

By the end of the class, our clothes were soaked. (So glad we got those towels for 2 extra big ones.) Still, as I’ve come to experience with yoga of all different types, my mind was peaceful. I felt very balanced. I sweat when I run on the treadmill, but something about  yoga sweat is different–more purifying somehow. They talk a lot about releasing toxins so maybe that’s what’s going on. Whatever it is, I’m in. Toxins be gone!
